U.S. ethanol production at record pace

ethanol plant-emmetsburgAccording to a report from Ethanol Producer magazine, the U.S. ethanol industry is closing out 2014 with a bang, setting weekly production records in four of the last five weeks.

For the week ending December 19th, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported another week of record-breaking production at 992-thousand barrels per day. Geoff Cooper of the Renewable Fuels Association says that equates to an annualized rate of more than 15.2 billion gallons of ethanol per year.

Cooper tells the magazine that 2014 will be a record year for annual ethanol output, with approximately 14.3 billion gallons of production. That eclipses the previous record of 13.9 billion gallons in 2011.

Despite the increased production, ethanol stocks have held steady over the last couple of weeks. Cooper says that “unprecedented” ethanol consumption, particularly from the export market, is keeping ethanol stocks in check and ensuring a good supply-demand balance is maintained in the marketplace.
