2014 Year in Review

After many months of stalled debate, the farm bill was finally passed by Congress early in 2014.  The arduous process dogged Congress and the administration a month into the new year.

Several issues resulted in new records in 2014 for cattle, hog and dairy prices.

The harvest was remarkably good.  Record volumes of corn and soybeans sent those markets lower.  But failure to secure Chinese approval of a biotech corn trait was reason enough for that country to reject entire shiploads of corn in which the trait was detected.  In spite of that, U.S. ag exports set records.

A proposed rule change affecting government regulation of navigable waters received strong pushback from much of the agricultural community.  These and many other stories are part of Brownfield’s Year in Review, a look back at the events that shaped the agricultural landscape in 2014.
