Midday livestock prices

Cattle country is slow to see action so far on Thursday. Some cattle traded yesterday in Nebraska at 249.00 to 250.00 on a dressed basis, down 6.00 to 7.00 from last week’s weighted average. Kansas and Texas also moved a few cattle from 156.00 to 157.00, 7.00 lower than last week. Asking prices on the remainder of the showlists are around 158.00 plus in the South and 252.00 plus in the North.

Boxed beef cutout values in the midday report are steady to weak. Choice beef is up .11 at 242.52, and select is down .57 at 230.56.

Feeder cattle receipts at the St. Joseph, MO Stockyards totaled 2,000 head on Wednesday. Compared to last week, a mostly sharply lower market. There were many instances where the market was down 30.00 to 40.00 on fleshy un-weaned calves, feeder bulls, singles, odd packages and less attractive quality feeders. Feeder steers medium and large 1 averaging 617 pounds brought 251.91 per hundredweight. 623 pound heifers averaged 223.83.

Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota and Eastern DirectX trade areas are not reported due to confidentiality. Western hogs are 2.43 lower with a weighted average of 75.24 on a carcass basis, nationally the market is 1.15 lower at 75.55. Missouri direct base carcass meat price is steady to 1.00 lower from 74.00 to 77.00. Midwest hogs on a live basis are steady with tops from 54.00 to 60.00.

The pork carcass cutout value is down .62 at 86.62 FOB plant. The butt, picnic and rib primals are higher, with all other cuts lower.

Private analysts believe the monthly cold storage to be unveiled early next week will contain smaller stockpiles of frozen pork.

The pork carcass value took a bad stumble at midweek with all primals suffering significant erosion except the belly.
