Koster still believes in dismissed California egg court case

Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster accepts the MO-AG Advocate for Agriculture Award, Columbia, Mo., Dec. 17, 2014.The Missouri Agribusiness Association – MO-AG, as it’s commonly known – recognized Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster for his support of agriculture in Missouri.  After accepting the organization’s Advocate for Agriculture Award, Koster said that policy makers should do all they can to protect agriculture in Missouri.

“So whether it be intrusion via eminent domain or curtailment of animal husbandry in this state, that policy makers stay very aware that this is the dominant industry in our state and deserves our attention and protection in both urban and rural areas of Missouri,” said Koster, following the presentation during the MO-AG annual meeting in Columbia.

Koster has led the six-state lawsuit challenging California’s controversial egg bill.  The law extends the requirements for the treatment of egg-laying hens to out-of-state egg producers whose eggs are marketed in California.  Even though it’s been thrown out of court, Koster says he still believes in the case, which is being appealed.

“It’s important that these foreign state legislatures, whether it be California or anywhere else in the country, be stopped from trying to regulate what goes on on Missouri farmland,” said Koster.

Koster also supported the highly contested Farming Rights Amendment, which was passed by a thin margin on the August state-wide ballot.
