Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has announced a beef industry summit in early January to “develop strategies to maximize the potential of Missouri’s cattle industry and spur economic development in rural areas.”

Nixon says he wants participants to identify ways cow-calf operators can grow their herds. While Missouri ranks second in cow-calf inventory in the nation, behind Texas, all but five-percent of the state’s cattle are finished and processed out-of-state. The average herd size in Missouri is 38 head.
