United Soybean Board’s budget tops $86 million

The United Soybean Board’s (USB) new treasurer, John Motter, says based on anticipated checkoff collections, the USB annual budget is about $86.5 million.  As a new officer of the board, one of the priorities of Motter, who is from Ohio, is to work on public acceptance of biotechnology.

“There are so many traits out there that either are good for the farmer or good for the consumer and we need to be able to use those tools to make a food supply,” said Motter.

Despite more than half of the renewable biodiesel feedstock being soybean oil, the new USB chairman, Bob Haselwood of Kansas, doesn’t seem phased by falling oil prices.

“Oil prices have come down and gasoline prices have come down, but the diesel market has stayed very consistent here over the last few months,” said Haselwood, leading a conference call on the final day of the USB meeting in St. Louis.  “That’s the market we’re competing in, so we are still able to compete at the levels currently that regular diesel fuel is selling.”

The USB annual meeting was last week.
