Nebraska Farm Bureau seeks infrastructure improvements
Nebraska Farm Bureau members are expressing concern about what they say is the declining condition of the state’s rural roads and bridges.
“There’s a lot of areas that producers are having to travel a substantial distance around to get their commodities to market,” says Mark McHargue of Central City, vice president of Nebraska Farm Bureau. “It’s just something that’s a long-term investment that we need to make.”
At their annual meeting in Kearney, Farm Bureau delegates approved a resolution saying they’re willing to allow counties to implement a local sales tax for repair and maintenance of county roads and bridges—but only if it used for that purpose. The delegates said they would also like to see some state highway budget dollars given to the counties for bridge repair and maintenance.
