Producers encouraged by low number of PEDv cases

2005 Certificate of Distinction Winner Bret Marsh

As the cold, winter temperatures move in, pork producers around Indiana have been encouraged at the lack of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus cases being reported.  Indiana state veterinarian Dr. Bret Marsh tells Brownfield it has been relatively quiet.  “We’re kind of watching cautiously,” he says.  “Since the federal mandate for reporting came in June of this year – and we receive all of those reports – we can see if there happens to be any movement in the cases as they come in.”

Because Indiana’s producers have been active in the Premises Registration, Marsh tells Brownfield pork producers are ready for the now mandatory reporting of PEDv.  “The laboratory admissions require a Premises ID number,” he says.  “Then that information comes to our office and we can identify that Premises with the laboratory result.”

And without singling out a farm that has broke with PEDv, the Board of Animal Health is able to track the movement of the virus.
