A little less meat this year

Total U.S. red meat production is expected to be 47.4 billion pounds this year, nearly 2 billion pounds less than in 2013. The latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates from USDA say beef production will be 1.4 billion pounds less than last year at 24.3 billion pounds.  Pork production should be around 22.8 billion pounds this year down some 400 million pounds from 2013.

Total poultry production should be a little more than in 2013. Broiler output is projected to be 38 billion pounds and turkey production is estimated at 5.7 billion pounds.  Both totals are above 2013 levels.

Combined red meat and poultry production is projected at 91.7 billion pounds in 2014, 1.2 billion below a year ago.
