Beckmann on Global Food Security bill

Programs ICONEnding hunger in America and abroad is the goal of the Bread for the World organization and its leader says some great strides are being made.  Reverend David Beckmann, a World Food Prize winner, says the U.S. House is poised to pass the Global Food Security Bill today.

In an interview with Brownfield Ag News, Beckmann said, “It’s a bipartisan act that would endorse, authorize and give some durability  to what the U.S. government has been doing to improve the productivity of farmers in poor countries and improve nutrition in poor countries.” Beckmann, who is from Nebraska, says Senator Mike Johanns and Representative Jeff Fortenberry of Nebraska were key in getting that introduced.

He points out that worldwide poverty is on the decline and that should speak volumes to the U.S., adding, “If they can reduce hunger and poverty in Bangladesh we can do it in Iowa. {laughs} You know, we don’t need to have hungry people in Iowa. This is fixable.”

Beckmann tells Brownfield that Bread for the World is working with leaders in the Midwest, where farmers produce an abundance of food, to make sure no one is hungry here at home. Keeping further food stamp cuts from taking place, he says, is critical.
