Rains overspread the southern, eastern Corn Belt
Across the Corn Belt, rain is overspreading the southern tier of the region, with the heaviest precipitation falling across Missouri and southern Illinois. Soggy fields are impeding late-season fieldwork, especially with regard to late-season corn harvest efforts in the eastern Corn Belt.
On the Plains, rainy, foggy weather stretches from Kansas southward into eastern Texas. Some of the heaviest rain is falling across southeastern Kansas. Elsewhere, mild, dry weather prevails on the central High Plains, but cold conditions linger in parts of Montana and North Dakota.
In the South, warm weather prevails, except for cool conditions in the southern Mid-Atlantic region. Across the lower Southeast, warm, dry weather favors winter wheat development and late-season harvest efforts. Scattered showers are developing, however, from eastern Texas to Virginia and the Carolinas.
In the West, generally mild, dry weather prevails between storms. In California and environs, recent precipitation has boosted topsoil moisture and encouraged some growth of pastures and native grasses. However, freezing levels associated with the recent storm were very high, leading to only modest improvements in mountain snowpack. Light precipitation associated with a new storm is moving into the Pacific Northwest.
