A mild, December pattern for the Heartland

A winter weather event from the lower Great Lakes region into the Northeast will end by mid-week.

Meanwhile, heavy rain and high-elevation snow will continue to spread ashore in California, where storm-total precipitation could reach 2 to 4 inches or more from the Sierra Nevada to the coastal mountains of southern California. Late in the week, drier weather will return to California, while precipitation will shift into the Pacific Northwest. At week’s end, precipitation (locally 1 to 2 inches) will also develop from the southeastern Plains to the central Appalachians. During the second half of the week, mild weather will expand to cover nearly all of the country.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for warmer-than-normal weather nationwide, except for near-normal temperatures across Florida’s peninsula. Meanwhile, below-normal precipitation from southern California to the northern Plains and upper Midwest will contrast with wetter-than-normal conditions in the Pacific Northwest and from the south-central U.S. northeastward into New England.
