Celeb chefs seek lawmaker support of GMO bill

Programs ICONSome celebrity chefs reportedly will sit down to a Chipotle meal with several U.S. lawmakers to push companion bills that would require food products containing genetically modified ingredients to be labeled as such.

One of the chefs, Tom Colicchio, a Bravo TV “Top Chef” judge, is a board member of Food Policy Action, which supports those bills. The legislation is not expected to gain traction.

Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa says he favors a bill backed by the Grocery Manufacturers Association that would ban all state attempts to require genetically modified foods to be labeled…

“I’m more apt to be for Representative Pompeo of Kansas’ bill setting federal standards of what labeling you would have on food.”

Grassley says labeling should mean something…

“Consumer should only be given information that’s scientifically based. So saying that something’s got GMO in it, when there’s no science to say GMO is bad, doesn’t do any good.”

The House Agriculture Committee will soon hold a hearing on the Pompeo bill.
