A mild pattern ahead for much of the Nation

During the next 24 hours, wintry precipitation (snow, sleet, and freezing rain) will spread from the mid- South into the Mid-Atlantic States. However, during the mid- to late-week period, mild weather will overspread much of the U.S., except for lingering cold conditions across the nation’s northern tier. Meanwhile, significant precipitation will arrive in California, starting on Tuesday and lasting several days. Five-day precipitation totals could reach 2 to 7 inches in key watershed areas of the Sierra Nevada, while amounts approaching 5 inches can be expected in the coastal mountains of southern California. Lighter precipitation will affect other areas of the West. Elsewhere, rain will develop late in the week from the mid-South into the Ohio Valley.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for above-normal temperatures nationwide, with the greatest likelihood of warm weather stretching from California into the lower Ohio Valley. Meanwhile, below-normal precipitation across the lower Southeast and from the Pacific Coast into the upper Midwest will contrast with wetter-than-normal weather from the south-central U.S. into the Ohio Valley and Northeast.
