Cold wave pattern builds across the Heartland

Across the Corn Belt, cold weather has returned. Monday morning’s temperatures fell below 0° in the upper Midwest, increasing livestock stress. Farther south, a cold rain is falling in the Ohio Valley, while wintry precipitation (sleet and freezing rain) is causing some travel disruptions from the Ozark Plateau into southern Illinois.

On the Plains, very cold, dry weather prevails. A snow cover is providing some insulation for winter wheat on the northern Plains, where Monday morning’s low temperatures ranged from 0 to -20°. Current snow depths in Montana stand at 4 inches in Billings and Great Falls.

In the South, warmth lingers—and is promoting late-season fieldwork—in the Atlantic Coast States and along the Gulf Coast. Sharply colder weather is invading the mid-South, accompanied by some wintry precipitation in northern Arkansas.

In the West, warmth across the southern two-thirds of the region contrasts with cold conditions from the Pacific Northwest to the northern Rockies. Wintry weather is developing across parts of Oregon and southern Idaho, where Pacific moisture is overrunning cold air.
