Fluid milk sales trends continue

The USDA Ag Marketing Service says 3.9 billion pounds of packaged fluid milk products were sold in July, down 3.4 percent from July of 2013. Conventional fluid milk sales totaled 3.69 billion pounds down 4 percent.

Organic milk product sales in July totaled 205 million pounds up 8.3 percent from July of last year. Year-to-date organic sales are up 11.6 percent.  Organic whole milk sales totaled 61 million pounds up 18.5 percent from July of last year.  Organic reduced fat milk sales are 23.7 percent above a year ago at 65 million pounds.

The weighted average advertised price for a half-gallon of organic milk is $3.63 down 3 cents from two weeks ago and a nickel below a year ago. A half-gallon of conventional milk is $2.44 up 30 cents from two weeks ago.  That puts the organic-to-conventional spread at $1.19 per half gallon, down 32 cents from two weeks ago.  A year ago the spread was $2.68.
