A-FAN works to expand Nebraska’s livestock industry
When you think about the livestock industry in Nebraska, the beef industry is probably the first thing that comes to mind. But Willow Holoubek, executive director of the A-FAN, says there’s plenty of opportunity to expand other livestock sectors as well.
“Beef is our foundation,” Holoubek says, “but the pork, dairy and poultry industries all have huge opportunities in the future, in protein production, to feed the world.”
Holoubek says custom hog finishing offers opportunities for Nebraska farmers to expand and diversify their operations.
“The pork industry has tremendous potential for growth,” she says. “Currently Nebraska exports about 25 percent of the piglets that are born here in our state. They’re exported out of state to be fed and brought to market weight, and then are brought back to Nebraska for processing. So there is a tremendous opportunity for feeding spaces here in Nebraska.”
Efforts to expand Nebraska’s livestock industry were in the spotlight Monday at A-FAN’s annual meeting in Lincoln.
