Red meat, poultry cold storage numbers decline
USDA’s monthly cold storage report shows smaller supplies of red meat on solid demand and a lower monthly slaughter rate.
As of October 31, 2014, red meat in cold storage came out at 941.849 million pounds, down 9% from October 31, 2013. Beef was reported at 374.868 million pounds, a 15% year to year decline, and pork was pegged at 524.769 million pounds, 7% less than last year.
Poultry totaled 1.052 billion pounds, 9% lower than a year ago. Chicken made up most of the total at 659.247 million pounds, also 9% lower than last year, and turkey came out at 390.249 million pounds, down 10%.
The next set of cold storage numbers is out December 22.
