Cover crops benefit soil health

MichaelShuterEdit

Soil health is a vital component to sustainable farming. Indiana farmer Mike Shuter has been no-till farming for nearly 30 years.

He says cover crops play a significant role in maintaining soil health on his farm.  “We’re trying to keep something green and growing on the field all year round,” he says.  “It helps build nutrients for the organisms that are in the soil and in turn those organisms will help the crop whether it is corn or soybeans.”

Shuter tells Brownfield in addition to increased yields, they’ve seen several other benefits to planting cover crops.  “We’ve increased water infiltration and the cover crops have continued to help and increase that,” he says.  “In addition it helps hold over some of the soil nutrients over the winter.”

He spoke earlier this week at the first Indiana field day for the Soil Health Partnership.
