Railway backlogs up north are only part of the frustration for U.S. grain farmers.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers construction that is impeding barge travel just north of Memphis on the Mississippi River, laying concrete mats to prevent erosion.

American Soybean Association President Danny Murphy tells Brownfield Ag News the ASA and other ag groups pleaded for the Corps to postpone the project, to no avail, “This is our prime export season and for it to end up taking almost two weeks slowing traffic down — and, that probably drops the basis for growers, up north of there. It’s disappointing that had to take place and hamper our exports.”

Chris Novak, CEO of the National Corn Growers Association, NCGA, tells Brownfield, “It’s costing farmer’s money. It’s costing barge companies money. It’s poor timing and poor decision making on the part of the Corps.”

Brownfield interviewed Murphy and Novak at the National Association of Farm Broadcasting convention Trade Talk in Kansas City, Missouri.
