Cold wave continues across much of the Heartland

Across the Corn Belt, snow showers and squalls persist downwind of the Great Lakes. Cold, dry weather covers the remainder of the Midwest. A snow cover continues to limit fieldwork in parts of the northern Corn Belt, but harvest activities are proceeding in other areas, despite cold conditions. On November 9, at least half of the corn remained in the field in Wisconsin (50% harvested) and Michigan (43%).

On the Plains, temperatures have begun to moderate. However, sub-zero readings were noted again—for the fourth consecutive day—across portions of the northern Plains, maintaining stress on livestock. A few readings below -20° were reported this morning in Montana.

In the South, Freeze Warnings were in effect early Friday as far south as the Gulf Coast, from southeastern Texas to westernmost Florida. However, temperatures remained well above the freezing mark in winter agricultural regions of Deep South Texas and Florida’s peninsula.

In the West, precipitation continues to spread inland, mainly from Oregon to Wyoming. Little, if any, rain or snow is falling elsewhere in the West, despite widespread cloudiness. Very cold weather in the Rockies and Northwest contrasts with late-season warmth from California to Arizona.
