Cold pattern to slowly moderate

Additional surges of cold air will maintain significantly below-normal temperatures through at least the first half of the next week across the central and eastern U.S. Cool weather will also expand in the West, although warmth will linger in parts of California. Meanwhile, a developing storm system will produce widespread precipitation during the next several days, including snow in most areas along and north of a line from central portions of the Rockies and Plains into the Ohio Valley. Storm-total rainfall could reach 1 to 3 inches in the central Gulf Coast region, but little or no precipitation will occur during the next 5 days on the northern Plains and from central and southern California to the southern High Plains.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for below-normal temperatures from Plains to the East Coast, while warmer-than-normal weather will be limited to the West. Meanwhile, near- to below-normal precipitation across the majority of the U.S. will contrast with wetter-than-normal weather in southern Florida, the western Gulf Coast region, northern California, and the Northwest.
