Early-season cold wave across the Heartland

Across the Corn Belt, snow showers linger across the upper Midwest and downwind of the Great Lakes. Early Wednesday morning snow depth in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, is 3 inches. Late-season corn harvesting is on hold across the northern Corn Belt, but producers across the remainder of the Midwest are harvesting as conditions permit. Wednesday morning low temperatures generally fell below 10° in parts of the upper Midwest.

On the Plains, freezes were noted Wednesday morning as far south as central and northeastern Texas. Meanwhile, temperatures plunged below 0° throughout the northern High Plains. In areas—such as western Nebraska— where little, if any, snow is on the ground, sub-zero temperatures may burn back growth on emerging winter wheat. In Montana, however, current snow depths include 3 inches in Great Falls and 2 inches in Billings.

In the South, warmth lingers in the Atlantic Coast States, but much colder air is overspreading the remainder of the region. Temperatures fell to near 20° Wednesday morning across parts of the Ozark Plateau. Dry weather prevails, except for a few showers along the immediate Gulf Coast from southern Texas to Louisiana.

In the West, warm weather from California to Arizona contrasts with cold conditions in the Rockies and Northwest. Freeze warnings are in effect early today across a broad area of the interior Northwest.
