Groups sue FDA over ractopamine drugs

Programs ICONThe Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is among a half-dozen groups suing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over its approval of ractopamine-bssed animal drugs. The beta-agonist is added to feed to increase growth in livestock (cattle and pigs).

In two separate challenges, the groups say the FDA did not properly assess food safety, environmental, animal welfare and other concerns of the drug.

They’re asking the court to set aside the FDA’s approval of ractopamine-based animal drugs since 2008.  The FDA has insisted that ractopamine use is safe.

The lawsuits have been filed in federal court in San Francisco.  The other groups are the Center for Food Safety, Center for Biological Diversity, the Sierra Club, United Farm Workers and the Animal Legal Defense Fund.
