Weather

Cold wave ahead

During the weekend, scattered, generally light rain and snow showers will develop and gradually intensify across the nation’s northern tier, with a possibility of heavy snow in and around Montana. By early next week, much colder air will envelop the Great Plains and Midwest. However, little to no precipitation is forecast through the next 5 days from the southern Plains to the Ohio Valley, which would support a continuation of rapid fieldwork. Meanwhile, unusually warm weather will prevail in the Far West and—in advance of the cold outbreak—across the South. With the exception of southern Texas and the Florida Peninsula, little or no precipitation will occur across the South over the next 5 days.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for near- to below-normal precipitation across the majority of the U.S., with the highest likelihood of dryness in the West and Midwest. Wetter-than-normal conditions are expected in southern Texas and the western Gulf Coast region, the Great Lakes Region, and a few locations along the Atlantic Seaboard. Above-normal temperatures will persist in the West but cooler-than-normal weather should dominate from the eastern Rockies to the Atlantic Seaboard.
