Cheese production up 4.7% in September

Cheese production in the United States in September totaled 942 million pounds up 4.7 percent compared to September of 2013.  Italian-type cheese production was up 7.9 percent at 415 million pounds and American-type cheese output was 4 percent higher at 361 million pounds.

Wisconsin cheese production totaled 241 million pounds in September up 3 percent from a year ago.  The Badger State American type cheese production increased 5.8 percent with Cheddar up 6.1 percent.  Italian-type cheese production was up 2.6 percent compared to September of 2013.

California total cheese production in September was up 5.4 percent at 195.6 million pounds.  American type cheese production in the Golden State increased 1.5 percent with Cheddar output 12.2 percent higher than a year ago.  Italian cheese production was 7 percent higher.

U.S. butter production in September totaled 130 million pounds down 1.6 percent from a year ago.

Other dairy product production compared to September of 2013:

  •             Nonfat dry milk; 114 million pounds (+54.1%)
  •             Skim milk powders: 40.9 million pounds (-24.5%)
  •             Dry whey: 69.5 million pounds (-3.9%)
  •             Lactose: 100 million pounds (+13.7%)
  •             Whey protein concentrate: 42.1 million pounds (+7%)
  •             Regular ice cream: 61.7 million gallons (-1.8%)
  •             Low fat ice cream: 32.2 million gallons (-3.2%)
  •             Sherbet: 3.23 million gallons (+3.9%)
  •             Frozen yogurt: 4.59 million gallons (-19.1%)

 

Year-to-date: U.S. cheese production is 8.4 billion pounds up 2.7 percent compared to January-through-September of 2013.  American cheese output is 1.4 percent higher with Cheddar up 1.8 percent.  Italian cheese production is 4.9 percent above a year ago.

Butter production for January-through-September totals 1.378 billion pounds down 2.5 percent from the same period a year ago.
