Another questionable dairy study

Milk

A new study published in the British Medical Journal this week says people who drank three-or-more glasses of milk a day not only saw no reduction in broken bones but were twice as likely to die earlier than those who consumed less than one glass a day.

The study conducted by Uppsala University in Sweden tracked 61,000 women and 45,000 men for 20 years.  The subjects filled out a questionnaire.  The study leaders say more research is needed before any dietary changes are made.  The hypothesis is that galactose, a simple sugar found in milk causes an inflammatory response which makes bones more likely to break.

As quickly as the story spread across the internet, it drew criticism from multiple sources.  Greg Miller Ph.D with the National Dairy Council questions the study; “It took one dietary record from people and then 20 years later looked at their risk of dying and their rate of fractures.”  He says they do not take into account a number of factors which could have changed their risk over the years.  “It flies in the face of all the science that has been done up to date.”  He cites the science that has gone into the U.S. Dietary Guidelines.

Miller talks about the study and the facts:
