Late-season warmth for parts of the Heartland

Across the Corn Belt, rain showers and a few thunderstorms are affecting northern corn and soybean production areas. Autumn fieldwork, with the exception of upper Midwestern soybean harvesting, remains behind schedule due to late crop maturation and the lingering effects of early- to mid-October downpours.

On the Plains, cooler air is arriving across Montana and the western Dakotas in the wake of a cold front’s passage. Scattered showers in the vicinity of the front stretch from the Dakotas into Nebraska. Meanwhile, late-season warmth lingers across the southern Plains, where Monday’s high temperatures will again approach or reach 90°, and where soil moisture shortages remain a concern with respect to winter wheat establishment.

In the South, very warm, dry weather remains ideal for a variety of fieldwork activities, including winter wheat planting and soybean, cotton, and peanut harvesting.

In the West, cooler weather has replaced recent warmth. A frost advisory is in effect early today in parts of southern Idaho. Dry weather covers most areas, although a few showers are arriving in the Pacific Northwest.
