Harvest resumes in parts of Indiana

After a week of weather delays, today was the first day back at harvest for Monticello, Ind. farmer Brian Scott.

He says yields have been impressive so far this year.  “But we actually haven’t finished an entire corn field yet because of the weather,” he says.  “We’ve been bouncing around to different places.  The field I’m in now, just clicked up at tenth to 222 for the average – which is pretty awesome.  I haven’t been in a field yet that is under 200.”

The wet weather isn’t just causing delays in harvesting the crop, it is also pushing back other fall activities.  “We have a few hundred acres going into cereal rye ahead of soybeans,” he says.  “We intended to drill every acre of our cover crops this year – to get a little better coverage than the airplane does.  However, we’ve decided to fly everything on because we’re at a point where we can get into the field, but it doesn’t take much rain to get everyone back out of the fields again.”

And, he says, no one in his area is talking about any fall tillage – at least any time soon.
