Time running out to plant wheat
The delayed soybean harvest is also making wheat planting difficult for some.
Laura Lindsey, small grains specialist at Ohio State University says that while it’s still possible to plant when into late October there is risk.
Lindsey says a frost or freeze in November or December with late planted wheat could cause problems, still she says farmers like having wheat in their corn and soybean rotation.
“There is some data that shows that when you add wheat into a corn-soybean rotation, the rotational benefit can result in at least a 5 percent increase in both corn and soybean yields,” the small grains specialist said.
It is recommended that farmers still planning to plant wheat should boost the seeding rate to 1.6 to 2 million seeds per acre.
“You want a certain number of tillers in the spring to have maximum wheat yield,” Lindsey said. “Increased seeding helps produce more tillers.”
