It’s Farm to School month

This is national Farm-to-School Month, an effort to get locally-grown foods into schools.  Wisconsin’s Alice in Dairyland, Zoey Brooks says it promotes healthy eating and teaches students about where their food comes from.  And it is not just fruits and vegetables: “It spans all five food groups including local beef, local dairy products, maple syrup and those fruits and veggies.”

The effort also helps teach people how to properly prepare the various foods: “We bring in local chefs and local farmers” to help them learn about not only how the food is grown but how to best serve it.  School gardens are also a part of the program as are school greenhouses.  Brooks talks about the effort:
