Big corn crop adds to harvest delays

The record setting corn crop is putting additional pressure on farmers.  Purdue ag economist Chis Hurt says the logistics of actually harvesting this crop is becoming a challenge.  “Even just handing this crop,” he says. “For the grain industry to try and get their arms around and digest this very big crop is probably going to result in some slowdowns of harvest activity.”

Hurt tells Brownfield high moisture content is also hindering harvest progress.  “Moisture is still running pretty high,” he says. “Indiana moisture levels are around 22 percent and what that says is a lot of drying.  So dyer capacity in constrained when you have relatively high moisture levels, plus you have a lot of volume to get through those dryers.”

He says demand for storage will exceed capacity by about 100 million bushels across Indiana.
