BioForward summit in Wisconsin

Bioforward held its annual Bioscience Vision Summit in Madison on Wednesday.  Founded in 1987 as the Wisconsin Biotechnology Association, BioForward is a partnership of leaders in the biotech industry in the state from medical, research, biofuels, food and agriculture.  The theme of this year’s summit is “Growth by Association,” highlighting the importance of opportunities to collaborate and share helpful information and best practices.

Governor Scott Walker told the group that bioscience is a growing driver of Wisconsin’s economy.  “We are leading the nation in several bioscience-related growth areas, including job gains in bioscience fields, and university investments in bioscience research and development.  This forward-thinking industry offers exciting potential for job creators and job seekers, and its only getting better.”

The Governor noted bioscience growth in Wisconsin:

  • In 2012: 32,000 bioscience related jobs in 1,391 business entities
  • Double digit job gains in bioscience sectors including: drugs and pharmaceuticals, medical device manufacturing, and research, testing and medical labs
  • $934 million in bioscience academic research in 2012 (70 percent of all academic research in Wisconsin)
  • More than 3,000 bioscience-related patents issued to Wisconsin inventors over the past five years
