Windy, much colder air on the move

Across the Corn Belt, widespread showers stretch southward from the Great Lakes region. On gusty winds, markedly colder air is entering the western Corn Belt, where Friday morning’s low temperatures fell to near 40°.

On the Plains, widespread freezes covered Montana and Wyoming early Friday morning, with minimum temperatures generally ranging from 20 to 30°. Cool, dry, windy weather prevails throughout the nation’s mid-section, except for a few rain showers on the central Plains.

In the South, showers and thunderstorms extend from the middle Ohio Valley to the central Gulf Coast. The rain is slowing fieldwork but boosting topsoil moisture in areas that experienced a dry September. Farther east, a final day of warm, dry weather favors harvest activities in the southern Atlantic coastal plain.

In the West, lingering cool weather in the Rockies contrasts with late-season warmth in the Pacific Coast States. Friday’s high temperatures could approach 100° as far north as California’s San Joaquin Valley. In addition, dry, breezy conditions are enhancing the risk of wildfire activity in parts of southern California.
