German farmer’s harvest perspective

Harvest is important to crop farmers everywhere in the world. On a Bayer CropScience trip to Germany last month, I spoke with farmer Armin Lind, who grows winter wheat, barley, oilseed rape and corn on about 80 hectares, about 200 acres. He farms alone in Central Germany…and says this has been a good year (not unlike that of many U.S. farmers). “This year, yes, we had a lot of rain. We had some months in the early spring where it was a little bit dry but since May we’ve had a lot of rainfall. During summer, end of July and beginning of August, we had a short, dry period where we could harvest our field crops.” And, Lind’s yields? He tells Brownfield, “Good yields. Prices are a little bit down but that’s okay.” Lind uses no-till and minimum-till farming methods and where the ground is “sloopy” he says he uses cover crops.
