Fall grazing opportunities

While parts of the state remain dry, limiting pasture growth, fall grazing opportunities are still available.

John Grimes, Extension beef coordinator at Ohio State University says minimizing the feeding of harvested feedstuffs is always good.

“Management wise right now we’ve still got a little bit of a window to get some of the annual crops sowed, probably better suited for rye, winter rye than oats, but those are two good fill-in crops to maybe extend the grazing season,” Grimes said. “With harvest started, corn stalk grazing is possible, but anything we can do to reduce the amount of harvested feed certainly cheapens our annual costs.”

The Ohio Beef Newsletter has several recent articles on grazing.
