South Dakota corn harvest only 2 percent complete

This past week, South Dakota temperatures were well above normal, helping advance row crop development. Topsoil moisture is 82 adequate to surplus.  Corn is still rated 74 percent good to excellent and 48 percent mature, 14 percentage points behind last year.  The crop is just 2 percent harvested.  Normally, 14 percent would be harvested by now.

Soybeans 76 good to excellent and 85 percent are dropping leaves, which is the same as last year, but slightly behind average.  7 percent of South Dakota’s soybean crop is harvested.  Normally, the soybean harvest is 22 done by now. Winter wheat is 63 percent planted.

 

Sorghum is 27 percent mature, normal is 59 average. Harvest is 3 percent done, which is also a little behind average.

Alfalfa hay 76 good to excellent and the third cutting is 88 percent complete.  The fourth cutting is 27 percent complete.

Pasture and range is 70 percent good to excellent.
