Warmer temps help Nebraska crops dry down

The warmer temperatures in Nebraska the past few days have accelerated the dry down of row crops and lowered grain moisture levels, pushing the crops closer to harvest.

As of Sunday, 63 percent of the state’s corn crop was mature and 76 percent of soybeans were dropping leaves.  Both figures are close to the five-year average for the end of September.  Seven percent of corn and six percent of soybeans have been harvested.  Those harvest numbers are running a little behind normal.

Dry bean harvest stood at 64 percent, slightly behind average.  The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay was 77 percent complete.

Pasture and range conditions rated 54 percent good to excellent and 33 percent fair.

The winter wheat crop is off to a good start.  Wheat planting reached 78 percent, five points ahead of the five-year average.  Wheat emergence, at 43 percent, was 12 points ahead of normal.
