Reminders for a safe harvest

As farmers move into the busy harvest season, rural roadways will soon be filled with large equipment.

Purdue Extension safety specialist Bill Field says farmers and motorists have to figure out a way to safely share the road.  “When we start comingling, people are going to have to give each other a break and slow down,” he says.  “Avoid putting people into binds or pressuring them to pass in unsafe passing zones or forcing the farmer to pull off the side of the road – which could be dangerous because of the weight of the equipment of the width of the equipment.”

And maintaining that relationship, he says, is vital to safety this harvest season.  “Some of the worst incidents I’ve seen in the past couple of years have been involving large pieces of equipment on public highways,” he says.
