Report shows decrease in farm fatalities

A recent Purdue University study showed farm fatalities in Indiana continued a downward trend.  Purdue Extension safety specialist says while the number of fatalities has declined, far too many still occur.  “But, we’re showing this continued downward trend, even from last year,” he says.  “It’s not the lowest number we’ve ever had – but it’s a number that reflects, what I think, is a trend that we are hopeful that will continue – with fewer and fewer of these incidents.”

Field tells Brownfield the reason for the decline in accidents might not be what one would think.  “I think one of the most significant trends that is affecting all types of these incidents,” he says.  “There is just fewer farmers out there that are involved in agricultural production.  You look at the proportion of people involved in farming – it gets less and less every year.”

And, he says, the advancements in technology helps, too.  “The equipment, the facilities, and the technology that we are using is safer than at any time in history,” he says.  “And it is the safest of any equipment in the world being used today.”

Another contributing factor to the decline in fatalities, he says, is the advancements in medical care – including those provided by emergency services.
