Dry weather favoring late-season development in the Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, dry weather continues to assist late-developing corn and soybeans push toward maturity. However, showers are encroaching on northwestern production areas, including the eastern Dakotas.

On the Plains, rain showers in the vicinity of a cold front stretch from the Dakotas into Wyoming. The northern Plains’ rain is slowing winter wheat planting and causing minor disruptions in the already-delayed spring wheat harvest. Farther south, flash flooding remains a threat on the southernmost High Plains due to the interaction between a cold front and remnant moisture associated with former Hurricane Odile.

In the South, locally heavy showers linger in the southern Atlantic region and in the vicinity of the Gulf Coast. Farther inland, however, warm, dry weather favors summer crop maturation and harvesting.

In the West, the remnant circulation of former Hurricane Odile dissipated overnight over southern New Mexico, but locally heavy showers linger. Elsewhere, very warm, mostly dry weather favors fieldwork and crop maturation, but several large wildfires remain active across northern California and the Northwest.
