Bayer CropScience continues to make big investments in biologics

Jonathan Margolis, vice president of Biologic Research at Bayer CropScience says today’s biologics are a much more diverse product than what they used to be.

“These are not the old biological products of 10 or 20 years ago,” Margolis says. “What we’re seeing today is very high scientific standards and production of products that meet the consistency, stability and hopefully the performance of traditional chemical products.“

Biologics are crop protection products that come from nature. For example, beneficial microbes from nature like bacteria, fungi or plant extracts are used to stimulate growth and increase yield.

Bayer crop scientists have sorted through more than a hundred thousand strains trying to select the best traits to improve the performance and the agronomic characteristics.

Bayer CropScience strives to continue providing these integrated solutions for the future.

“In the end, it shouldn’t matter what the tool is,” Margolis says. “The goal should be how do we get the highest yield, highest performance and most sustainable products and the most sustainable production systems.“
