Review of Wisconsin’s Livestock Siting law

Wisconsin Ag Secretary Ben Brancel has appointed a nine-member advisory committee to review the state’s Livestock Facilities Siting Law.  The committee is charged with determine if the current standards need to be updated to keep pace with changing agricultural practices while protecting the environment.  They will report to Secretary Brancel.

Deputy Ag Secretary Jeff Lyon will chair the advisory committee. Others appointed to the committee and their area of expertise:

  • Kevin Beckard, Ag Source Labs, Nutrient Management
  • Mark  Borchardt, Marshfield Ag Research Station,  Odor/manure irrigation
  • Tonya Gratz, Land & Water Conservation-Green Co.,  Nutrient Management
  • Jerry Halverson, Manitowoc Co. Conservation Dept., Engineering/Odor
  • Brian Holmes, Agricultural Engineering- WI-Madison, Engineering
  • Charles McGinley, St. Croix Sensory Inc., Odor
  • Bob Pofahl, Resource Engineering Associates Inc., Engineering
  • Matt Ruark, Dept. of Soil Science- UW-Madison, Nutrient Management

In addition, nine people from state and federal agencies who work with land and water issues have been named as advisors to the committee:

  • Joe Baeten, DNR Green Bay , Nutrient Management
  • Richard Castelnuovo, DATCP, Odor & Setbacks
  • Pat Murphy, Natural Resources Conservation-USDA, Nutrient Management
  • David Panofsky, DNR Central, Odor
  • Sue Porter, DATCP, Nutrient Management
  • John Ramsden, Natural Resources Conservation Service-USDA, Engineering
  • Steve Struss, DATCP, Engineering/Odor
  • Robert Thiboldeaux, WI Dept. of Health & Family Services, Odor/manure irrigation
  • Gretchen Wheat, DNR-Bureau of Watershed Management, Engineering

The committee will hold its first meeting this week.
