Recount confirms Right to Farm passage
The recount of votes on the so-called Farming Rights Amendment on Missouri’s August 5th primary election ballot confirmed its passage.
The recount narrowed the already thin margin between the “yes” and “no” votes to 2,375 votes. The difference before the recount was 2,490, a small fraction of the total votes cast.
“I think that’s the important thing down the road is that there’s some level of comfort that outside interests with ballot initiatives, etc., will be a little more difficult to impose their will on how we produce food here in Missouri,” said Don Nikodim, who chaired Missouri Farmers Care, a major proponent of the amendment.
The controversial ballot measure passed after heavy campaigning by both proponents and opponents of the measure.
Those favoring the amendment said that it will guarantee the right to do farming and ranching in the state in order to protect that sector of Missouri’s economy. On the other hand, opponents maintained that it would give too much power to large farming operations and allow them to ignore regulations. They also said that a constitutional amendment wasn’t necessary.
