$12 million targeted for Lake Erie

U.S. EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy has announced that $12 million dollars from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) has been awarded to address water quality issues in Lake Erie.

The $12 million will be used to expand monitoring and forecasting, increase incentives for farmers to reduce phosphorus runoff and improve the measurement of phosphorus in the tributaries of Lake Erie.

“This new funding is one more tool to combat the threat posed to Lake Erie,” said U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH). “The Federal government—specifically the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative—is committed to tackling this problem.”

“Every little bit helps,” said Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-OH). “No question, we need a robust response from local, state and federal government to get a handle on this issue and I commend the USEPA for this commitment.”

Funds will be available through state agencies in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
