Additional federal funding available

When U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced on August 19 that $2 million dollars in emergency federal funds, enough for 35,000 acres of cover crops, was being made available to help reduce runoff in the Western Lake Erie Basin, NRCS received some 450 applications for funding to cover 86,000 acres.

Last week, on August 29, the Senator announced another $1 million had been made available.

“We were able working with the Department of Agriculture to get some more money for Ohio,” Senator Brown said. “I hope we can continue this because this will make a difference in water quality throughout the Maumee River Basin and all the way into the Western Basin of Lake Erie.”

The Senator says the additional $1 million will provide funding for cover crops to be seeded on another 17,500 acres, bringing total acres to over 52,000 acres in the Western Lake Erie Watershed.
