New ‘Raising Nebraska’ ag exhibit debuts at Nebraska State Fair

raising nebraska 2014A new exhibit at the Nebraska State Fair will connect consumers with the farmers who raise and grow their food.

It’s called “Raising Nebraska”, a permanent, year-round agriculture exhibit located in the new Nebraska Building on the Nebraska State Fairgrounds at Grand Island.  It features several interactive displays including a full-sized pivot-irrigation system, a video theater enclosed in a grain bin, a 50-foot-long floor map of Nebraska, a virtual combine ride, an interactive dinner table and other educational experiences.

It’s all part of an effort to educate consumers about what Nebraska is doing toward food production and feeding the world and what production agriculture looks like for Nebraska.

On the opening day of the 2014 fair, Kathleen Lodl, associate dean of Extension at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), gave us a walking tour of the Raising Nebraska exhibit.

It was also announced that Cargill will be the title sponsor of Raising Nebraska, pledging one million dollars over five years.  Cargill officials from Nebraska met with the media to discuss the company’s donation.  Here are comments from Robert Racek, Western Region general manager of Cargill’s grain business; Jarrod Gillig, general manager of Cargill’s beef facility at Schuyler; and Tim Coppage, regional merchandising leader for Cargill’s Ag Horizons grain business.
