Proposal to reduce the number on the Cattlemen’s Beef Board

USDA is proposing to reduce the number of people on the Cattlemen’s Beef Board from 103 to 100.  According to the Beef Promotion and Research Order, a state or unit must have at least 500,000 head of cattle to have a seat on the board. An additional member is added for each 1 million head.

Due to a decline in cattle numbers since the last reapportionment in 2011, the number of domestic cattle producers on the board should decline from 96 to 94 and importer representation would go from seven to six.

Original data suggested the two domestic producer seats would come from Texas however the current rebuilding of the Texas herd may save one of those seats by time the reapportionment takes place.

The proposed changes would affect nominations made in 2014 for appointments to take effect in early 2015.  Details were published in the August 12th Federal Register.
