Making farm bill decisions

The 2018 Farm Bill reauthorized the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs with some modifications and the deadline to enroll is approaching.

A Farm Service Agency representative says farmers have until March 16 to sign up for the ARC, ARC-County, or PLC program.

Daniel Ford is the LaPorte county FSA executive director in Indiana.

“Farmers have to make a decision as to whether or not to update their yields, they need to make a program election to pick one of the three programs available, and then to follow through and enroll in the program for 2019 and 2020,” he says.

He says there is no right answer because it varies from county to county, but he suggests growers reach out to their local Farm Service Agency office sooner than later.

“Please contact your FSA office and make an appointment- it is kind of a lengthy process so it works best if you phone ahead,” he says.

Brownfield interviewed Ford at the Fort Wayne Farm Show.
