Southern corn rust found in Nebraska

Southern corn rust has been confirmed in southeast Nebraska.

The corn disease was found in a sample taken from Otoe County.  University of Nebraska specialists say the disease is moving into the state from the southern U.S., where it is fairly widespread.

Meanwhile, Iowa State University agronomist Clarke McGrath says he has yet to see southern corn rust in western Iowa.  McGrath says Iowa doesn’t see the disease that often, and when it does, it’s usually later in the season when it can’t do much damage.  McGrath says that while the odds aren’t great that southern corn rust will develop, it is something that farmers should keep an eye on.
